COURSE OVERVIEW
Are you passionate about the inside and outside spaces that you live in, work in, and play in? Do you look around you and think about how these spaces could and should be improved to be more imaginative and inspiring, healthy and safe, and environmentally sustainable? Simply, how about improving users’ experiences in these spaces through, for example, rearranging the furniture, changing the finishes, or making more significant structural modifications? If this excites and intrigues you, the Higher Certificate in Spatial Design will align with your interest. The field of Spatial Design is growing globally, responding to demands for sustainable, accessible, healthy, and safe spaces for diverse communities. It is a new and fast-emerging career choice for people opening opportunities to work in a wide range of settings within existing design disciplines and as independent consultants. As a spatial designer, you can work for design companies, the building or property industry, or start your own business. The modules covered in this qualification will prepare you to produce basic designs and draft contract documentation for interior and exterior spaces, ranging from kitchen design, exhibition and stage design, furniture design, museum design, event and experience design, window and retail display, and home staging.
The Higher Certificate in Spatial Design gives you direct entry into the world of work; alternatively, you can apply to study further for a diploma or bachelor’s degree in one of the associated disciplines, for example, interior design, architecture, product, or furniture design. This Higher Certificate qualification is endorsed by the African Institute of the Interior Design Professions (IID) and you will be able to register as a Professional Interior Decorator with the IID upon the successful completion of your studies.
