COURSE OVERVIEW

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB), as a professional legal qualification, equips students with a sound knowledge of the South African legal system.

The Bachelor of Laws professional degree will provide access to graduates for the professional assessments by both the Law Society and General Council of the Bar examinations.

 

FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES:

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Laws enables articulation towards NQF level 9 programmes in the relevant fields (LLM).

 

SUPPORT OFFERED:

Distance learning students have access to STADIO’s student support services via the learning management system. Students can access a range of presentations and online support initiatives aimed at success and wellness. At the start of the semester, new students will be invited to join the online student orientation programme to familiarise themselves with the services offered by STADIO. 

STADIO, in partnership with SADAG, has a dedicated STADIO student helpline providing students with free telephonic counselling, information, referrals, and support. Students will also have access to general counselling services.

Entry Requirements

THE ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR THE BACHELOR OF LAWS (LLB) PROFESSIONAL ARE:

 

  • A STADIO Bachelor of Commerce in Law (NQF 7); OR
  • an accredited Bachelor degree in the field of law, (NQF 7) with 360 credits.

In the event of an applicant not complying with the minimum admission requirements as stated above, he/she must complete the bridging modules (listed in Course Curriculum below) prior to commencing with the qualification.
 
MATURE AGE EXEMPTION

 

Candidates who do not meet the requirements for degree studies listed above, but who have reached the ages of 23 or 45 respectively, may apply for Mature Age Exemption via the USAF Matriculation Board under the following conditions:

  • Candidates who have reached/will reach the age of 23 during the first year of registration and who have achieved a Senior Certificate with a pass in at least four subjects, including one of the official languages experience and including one subject on Higher Grade; OR
  • Candidates who have reached the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.

 

STADIO is committed to achieving inclusion and to overcome barriers to access and success in higher education. Applicants who do not meet the stated admission criteria, but who have relevant work experience and/or prior learning may apply for admission under the policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). STADIO admits a maximum of 10% per cohort via RPL. The implementation of RPL is context-specific, in terms of discipline, programme and level.  Further information may be obtained from your Student Recruitment Advisor.

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laws consists of fifteen (15) compulsory modules and one (1) elective module.

The elective in the last semester of study enables students to select a module according to their field of interest or specialisation.

Prerequisites:

Before commencing with LEGAL RESEARCH ESSAY ON RESTORATIVE JUSTICE (LRM50B) a student must complete LEGAL RESEARCH METHODOLOGY (LRM50A).

 

    1st YEAR MODULES

    • African Customary Law 

    • African Human Rights Law 

    • Civil Procedure Law 

    • Constitutional Law 

    • Criminal Law

    • Criminal Procedure Law 

    • Jurisprudence in an African Context 

    • Mercantile Law I 

     

      2nd YEAR MODULES

      • Administrative Justice 

      • Law of Damages 

      • Law of Evidence

      • Legal Research Essay on Restorative Justice

      • Legal Research Methodology 

      • Mercantile Law II 

      • Social Justice 

      • ELECTIVE I Choose ONE of the following elective modules:

        • International Law OR Insolvency Law

       

       

      In the event of an applicant not complying with the minimum admission requirements as stated above (an undergraduate law qualification), he or she must complete the following eight (8) bridging modules prior to commencing with the qualification. To qualify for the bridging programme a 360-credit bachelor’s degree is required.

      • Law of Contract
      • Law of Delict

      • Law of Persons 

      • Law of Property 

      • Law of Succession 

      A student may not register for more than four (4) modules per semester.

      CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

      Graduates will be able to commence their articles at an attorney firm in order to prepare for the Board Examinations.

       

      The Bachelor of Laws prepares graduates with a critical understanding of legal practices and rules, as well as for entry into the legal profession as attorneys or advocates working for their own account after completing the Board Examinations (BAR).
