QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

The Bachelor of Arts in Law programme equips students to interpret and apply law and contribute to the development of the African political system. The programme also aims to offer personal and professional formation through the development of the students’ leadership skills and their understanding of the Humanities within the Southern African context. The programme will enable students to serve in a variety of capacities in the private and public spheres. It will provide the student with the knowledge base, theory, methodology and application relevant to the core areas of private law. The programme will also equip students to be public intellectuals and reflexive practitioners who work for change within Africa. They will learn analytical skills to interpret the political context creatively. 

They will also gain ethical leadership skills that equip them to lead and mobilise organisations and communities towards societal transformation. Students can pursue careers in law, journalism, politics, management, intelligence, and public administration. Through innovative learning approaches, the qualification promotes an inclusive and transformative ethos of reconciliation, equality, justice, and peace. The programme also serves as an alternative route for entry into the LLB (Level 8) degree.

 

FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES:

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Law a student may articulate Will be able to qualify for admission to a Bachelor of Laws at NQF level 8 (third year) or an Honours degree in Humanities at NQF level 8.

Entry Requirements

THE ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN LAW ARE:

  • a Senior Certificate (SC) with degree endorsement; OR

  • a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 50% in four 20-credit modules and a minimum of 40% in English Home Language or First Additional Language; OR

  • a National Senior Certificate – Vocational Level 4 (NC(V)) with a minimum of 50% in three fundamental modules including English; and minimum 60% in four vocational modules; OR

  • a relevant N6 National Diploma.

After completing the Bachelor of Commerce in Law, qualifying learners will be able to:

  1. Illustrate an understanding of relevant and essential knowledge of the principles, concepts and methods used by individuals in business organisations to gather, process, analyse and interpret financial data.

  2. Understand and apply management principles in the business environment and legal fraternity.

  3. Start and manage their own enterprises.

  4. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
