QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

The Bachelor of Commerce in Law degree will equip you with conceptual understanding, knowledge, theory, skills, methodology and capacity to function effectively in the business and legal environment of the future. 

You will gain advanced management knowledge and skills and will be able to make ethical decisions in a rapidly changing business environment driven by technological advances as well as advanced knowledge of the general rules of law in order to pursue a career in law or commerce.

 

FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES:

Upon completion enables further studies towards the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) postgraduate or the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours degree on NQF Level 8 or an equivalent NQF level 8 programme.

Entry Requirements

THE ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR THE BACHELOR OF COMMERCE IN LAW ARE:

  • A Senior Certificate (SC) with degree endorsement; OR

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 40% in English Home Language or First Additional Language coupled with a minimum of 50% in four 20-credit modules; OR

  • A National Senior Certificate - vocational level 4 (NC(V)) with a minimum of 50% in three fundamental modules including English, and minimum 60% in four vocational modules; OR

  • A relevant Higher Certificate or N6 National Diploma.

QUALIFICATION OUTCOMES

Students who completed the programme will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the South African legal system.

  2. Read legal texts and apply legal writing skills to draft legal documents.

  3. Apply the principles contained in core areas of South African private and public law.

  4. Solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking embedded in a humanistic paradigm.

  5. Work effectively with others as members of a team, group, organisation in communities and society at large.

  6. Manage the conceptualisation and implementation of strategies, policies and plans in a public sector environment with due regard to national and global contexts.

  7. Promote ethical decisions on complex institutional issues with sensitivity and awareness of consequences in an autonomous manner.

  8. Manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively to promote and strengthen tolerance and affirmation in problem-solving.

  9. Collect, interpret and process data and information to make informed decisions.

  10. Communicate effectively through engagement with literature from a wide variety of sources on politics, philosophy and economics.

  11. Participate as responsible citizens in the life of local, national and global communities in a culturally and aesthetically sensitive way using the humanities as the central pillar.
