Who We Are: The Culture, Credo, and Ethos of the STADIO School of Law

A law school is more than a place where legal rules are taught. It is a community shaped by shared values, a common purpose, and a collective commitment to something larger than any individual qualification.

Anri Lock Ferguson - Head of School: Law

At the STADIO School of Law, we have been deliberate about defining who we are, what we stand for, and how we show up for our students, for each other, and for our South African community.

Our Culture

The School of Law is a collaborative, reflective, and innovative learning community. We believe that the best legal minds are not formed in isolation but through engagement with ideas, peers, real-world and practical challenges, and perspectives different from our own. Diversity of thought is not a buzzword for us, it is a genuine pedagogical commitment. We create spaces where questions are welcomed, assumptions are examined, and learning flows in multiple directions.

At the heart of our culture lies a deep sense of social and constitutional responsibility. South Africa’s Constitution is not only a document we study, but it is also a framework we live by. Our students are invited to understand the law not only as a technical discipline, but as a force with the power that can protect, transform and serve our beautiful country.

Our Credo

Everything we do is oriented around a clear purpose to empower ethical servant-leaders for justice and transformation in communities and South African society. This is our credo. This is our declaration of intent. We are not merely training graduates to pass bar exams or fill positions in law firms. We are developing professionals who lead with conscience, who serve with integrity, and who understand that legal expertise carries a social responsibility.

Our Ethos

The School of Law’s ethos is firmly rooted in four values that inform how we teach, how we assess, how we engage with industry, and how we treat one another.

JusticeWe pursue fairness and justness in everything, inside and outside the classroom.

IntegrityWe hold ourselves and our students to the highest ethical standards.

ExcellenceWe are committed to rigorous, relevant, and future-fit legal education. Equipping our students for the world of work.

InclusivityWe affirm that law belongs to everyone, and our community is stronger because of its diversity.

These are not aspirational posters on a wall; these are the standards against which we measure our decisions, our programmes, and our conduct.

Whether you are a prospective student considering your path in law, a practitioner looking to engage with a school that shares your values, or a community partner exploring collaboration, know that you are welcome here. The STADIO School of Law is building a deliberate legal education community rooted in principle, oriented toward service, and committed to the betterment of South Africa.

We don’t just teach the law. We live it.

A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL: ANRI LOCK FERGUSON

Anri Lock FergusonWhen I joined the STADIO School of Law, I quickly came to appreciate that this was not simply a school in search of students, but rather it is a community in search of itself. The formalisation of our culture, credo, and ethos has been a meaningful pieces of work we have undertaken as a school, because it required us to be honest about what we believe and intentional about how we build.

I am passionate about legal education that does more than produce technically competent graduates, which, of course, we firmly believe in doing as well. South Africa needs competent lawyers, paralegals, and legal professionals who are ethically grounded, socially aware, and genuinely committed to justice.

To prospective students, I want you to know that you are choosing more than an excellent qualification when you choose us. You are joining a community with a clear sense of purpose. To our industry and community partners, I extend a sincere invitation to engage. Our doors are open, and our values align with yours. And to our existing students and staff: this is a declaration of what we already are, and a commitment to keep growing into it!
