BCom with additional Majors

Great news! The School of Commerce is expanding its BCom offerings, allowing students to build knowledge in additional disciplines! While the existing Majors, namely General, Economics, Financial Management, Investment Management and Risk Management will still be presented as is, there is an opportunity to also learn about International Business, Digital Marketing and Project Management as well as Fashion. All BCom students benefit from the qualification being current and fulfilling the new BCom requirements that the regulator expects from universities. This means that a technical foundation is set, and skills needed in the new world of work, like for example Data and Decision Making, Global Citizenship, Technology and Innovation Management, Project Management are built. Having said this, what makes those new Majors so exciting, though?

Project Management remains one of the extremely scarce skills in South Africa. As part of this Major, students can learn the skills needed to effectively plan, execute, and oversee projects from inception to completion. They will gain insight into project scheduling, resource allocation, risk assessment, and team management to ensure successful outcomes in various industries. This will open up a wide array of job opportunities for graduates.

Students with an interest in international business can develop a global perspective on business operations in an increasingly interconnected world. They will explore topics such as cross-cultural management, international trade and finance, global marketing, and international business strategies to thrive in diverse international markets, either based in South Africa or abroad. It will even enable graduates to explore some of the remote job opportunities that are increasingly offered.

Fashion is an industry that is changing dramatically, with an increased focus on sustainability. Spanning across the retail and media sectors, students can engage with topics ranging from visual merchandising to make-up and photography direction, and will be equipped to excel in an industry that is constantly evolving and pushing boundaries. Many doors could hence open for a student graduating with this particular Major.

Digital Marketing is a growing industry with many opportunities for graduates to grab. Students can explore the dynamic world of digital marketing, focusing on strategies and tactics to reach and engage target audiences online. Diving into topics such as social media marketing, search engine optimisation (SEO), content creation, and analytics will enable students to understand how to drive business growth in the digital age.

BCom in Accounting

A BCom in Accounting is a valuable foundation for those that are eying sought-after designations in the field of Accounting, like for example the Chartered Accountant (CA) (SA), but equally for those that would like to move into neighbouring fields, such as business or entrepreneurship. Students will delve into the language of business through the study of financial reporting, auditing and managerial accounting. While gaining expertise in interpreting and preparing financial statements, understanding tax regulations, and analysing financial data to provide vital information for decision-making and compliance, graduates are setting themselves up for a successful career path.
